Hawkins Announces Retirement of Firm Partner Kevin L. Simister



Orem, UT — Kevin Simister, trusted advisor, leader, mentor, and friend, is retiring from Hawkins Advisors after 42 tax seasons.  Kevin plans to travel, spend time with family, not work on April 15, and perfect his woodworking skills (which are already pretty much perfect!).

Kevin joined Hawkins in 1975.  He practiced in all areas of the firm including audit, accounting, and tax.  His expertise and focus for many years has been helping clients in business entity structuring, estate planning, tax reduction strategies, compensation agreements, negotiations, expert witness, and valuations.  He served as the managing partner for 10 years.  His leadership was instrumental in the growth of the firm during a time period of significant change.  Kevin was responsible for bringing desktop computers into the office, our first network, first website, and coined MyCPA.com.  He was instrumental in creating our Retirement Department.  Kevin has been a developer of people.  During his time at Hawkins, we have grown from 10 to more than 75 employees.  He has trained and mentored staff and clients, teaching them how to become trusted advisors, successful business people, and leaders in their business and community. He believes a leader must have genuine affection for each member of the team.

Kevin has always enjoyed serving and helping people.  As Captain of an Emergency Medical Team for Pleasant Grove City, he responded to over 1,500 medical emergencies during his 12 years of volunteer service.  He has served in many professional advisory board positions including the President of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants(UACPA), Executive Board of the Provo Orem Chamber of Commerce, Governing Council of the American Institute of Public Accountants, Chaired the Utah Valley University Business Faculty Development Committee, and the Executive Board of the Purpose Investors Network.  He was recognized by the UACPA as the Outstanding CPA in Public Accounting in 2007.  

During Kevin’s years of practice he has been a truly exceptional and respected advisor.  He has served his clients as a trusted advisor.  He protects them from unpleasant surprises through planning and implementation.  Kevin will say he doesn’t work with any businesses, just the people in the business.  His success has been through serving the people that are involved in the business and keeping it personal.  His secret sauce is his understanding and knowing the client, beyond the finances.  He can tell you the client’s family members, special medical or education needs, talents, and what they like to do for fun.  He will say he doesn’t have clients, but he sure has a lot of friends he works with.

We wish our friend, mentor, colleague, and soon to be retired partner many years of health and happiness in his retirement.

“Sneak peek” of Roots of Knowledge blends actors, technology and stained glass window panes as part of freshman experience

Orem, Utah – Utah Valley University (UVU) will kick off another academic year on Monday and welcome approximately 3,500 incoming freshman students – one of UVU’s largest incoming freshman classes on record – and their families to campus at its annual Freshman Convocation. As part of the ceremony, which begins at 6:00 p.m. at the UCCU Center, UVU will preview components of its Roots of Knowledge project, a bold, large-scale, permanent stained glass window exhibition comprising 80 individual panes that will total 10 feet in height and 200 feet in length when completed later this year. The project powerfully blends art, public space, and education, further strengthening the university’s vision and approach to engaged learning.

Upon completion, Roots of Knowledge will anchor an undulating wall of windows at the UVU Library entrance and will be unveiled to the public onNov. 18 as a capstone to the university’s 75th anniversary celebration.

Convocation attendees will be virtually transported through the exquisite and interactive stained glass window panes to learn of UVU’s unique mission and the opportunities that await them at UVU. The virtual experience was created by a cutting-edge multimedia team at UVU using the latest in digital and creative imaging technology integrated into some of the Roots of Knowledge window panes. The imagery will serve as a prelude to UVU President Matthew Holland’s welcome speech, which will include a discussion of Roots of Knowledge and its role in engaged learning.

“UVU Freshman Convocation is one of the most significant highlights of the academic year,” said President Holland. “The excitement felt by new students, their families, our faculty and staff will be elevated this year with UVU’s historic Roots of Knowledge exhibition. This extraordinary work of art underscores the university’s core commitment to serious reflection and consideration of the human mind’s greatest achievements. It will also serve as a centerpiece of our campus and yet another illustration of our engaged learning pedagogy and philosophy.”

As one of the four core themes of UVU, engaged learning immerses students in real-world contexts within the curriculum and activities outside the classroom to increase professional competence and confidence. Using this philosophy, hundreds of students and multiple faculty members have participated in the Roots of Knowledge project, from creating historical and cultural content to curriculum development that will enable Roots of Knowledge visitors to experience and more fully understand every visual element of the wall.

“Being a part of Roots of Knowledge has been an invaluable experience,” said 2016 UVU graduate Dallin Orr, who was the first student intern involved in the project – as a glass cutter, graphic designer and researcher – and has since been hired full-time at Holdman Studios as a glass painter. “It has given me a profound understanding of art and history and enabled me to create deep bonds with my professors and fellow students, as well as the artists at Holdman Studios. Importantly, I’m now gainfully employed.”

The Roots of Knowledge project is made possible through a public-private initiative led by UVU and Holdman Studios, one of the country’s top stained glass art studios based in Lehi, Utah, with funding from a generous donor community.

Studies Weekly Hosts Flag of Hope Created by Thousands of Hand Impressions from Across the U.S.

The Flag for Hope, a touring U.S. flag created by thousands of hand and finger

impressions from Americans across the country as a symbol of unity and patriotism,

came to the corporate office of Studies Weekly today where staff members along with

other members of the community made their impressions in red, white or blue paint.

Several people from the community, including WordPerfect co-founder Alan Ashton,

added their impressions to the flag.

“We are proud to host the touring Flag of Hope and place our own impressions upon it,”

said Ed Rickers, CEO of Studies Weekly. “It symbolizes patriotism and a coming

together of all people to promote unity and peace. It aligns well with our support of the

Statue of Responsibility project, which promotes civil responsibility and participation in

our country’s election process.”

During the Flag of Hope exhibit at Studies Weekly, staff members and guests from the

community made impressions upon the flag in either red, white, or blue paint. The new

impressions will join those already made by thousands of Americans from across the

election in history prior to the November U.S. presidential campaign.

interactive map will display red or blue to designate the leading candidate for each state

SCERA Youth Theatre’s Home School Triple Threat Announces August 31 Auditions

SCERA Youth Theatre’s Triple Threat is specifically designed for home school students ages 10-17 that are interested in being part of a more elite class of performers.  With an audition required for acceptance, participants in this class will experience a more elevated theatre class setting. Music, character work, choreography and other elements of becoming a well-rounded “triple threat” performer will be explored in depth in a more advanced, fast paced, professional setting. The group will perform in SCERA Youth Theatre’s Holiday and Spring Music Revue, as well as prepare and perform a Broadway-style show near the end of Winter Semester 2017.

A commitment for Fall and Winter Semester is expected and begins September 7, 2016 and runs through May 10, 2017.  The group meets on Wednesdays from 10:30am-12:30pm. Tuition is $40/month with a $35 production fee/semester.

Auditions for ages 10-17 will be Wednesday, August 31 between 10:00am and 12noon. No appointment is necessary. Students ages 10-17 should prepare 16 bars of a Broadway-style song to sing at auditions.  Audio playback or an accompanist is available. Please have music clearly marked or cued on your device.

Legend Solar Achieves 269 Percent Growth with 2016 Midyear Results

Ameritech College of Healthcare to Celebrate 10th Anniversary of its Nursing Program

Ameritech College of Healthcare today announced it will mark the 10th anniversary of its nursing program by hosting a celebration for students and faculty from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, Aug. 1, at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Founded in 1979, Ameritech College of Healthcare unveiled its nursing curriculum in 2006, a program that has since become the flagship for the college.

To commemorate this milestone, Ameritech is throwing a party and inviting all current, former and incoming students to join in the celebration alongside the Ameritech faculty and staff.

Held at Rio Tinto Stadium, home to Real Salt Lake, the party will take place on and around the soccer pitch at the east side pavilion. When guests aren’t munching on food provided by R & R Barbecue, they can join in soccer matches on the pitch led by some professional soccer players, all while enjoying tunes provided by guest DJs. Children, too, will enjoy inflatable bounce houses and other fun activities during the event.

“We are looking forward to seeing former Ameritech graduates and celebrating their own professional successes as we also welcome new students into the program during this great, family friendly event,” said Rick Bentz, vice president of marketing at Ameritech College of Healthcare. “And, of course, we can all enjoy a little friendly competition on the soccer field, too.”

Amid the festivities, guests are also invited to participate in a fundraising event with proceeds being donated to The Home Foundation, an organization dedicated to furnishing hearing aids, dentures, eye glasses and other necessary equipment and devices to less fortunate seniors. Utah was named the No. 1 state for business in CNBC’s 10th annual Top States ranking released today. The study highlighted the state’s strong job growth, robust technology sector and industrious workforce.

“Our long traditions of collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship have earned us a spotlight on the nation’s economic map, and businesses have noticed,” said Gov. Herbert. “One shining example is the rapid growth of Utah’s tech industry—the rise of Silicon Slopes.”

Gov. Gary Herbert authored a post for CNBC’s America’s Top States for Business blog in which he discussed the economic impact of Utah’s rapidly expanding technology sector and the unprecedented partnerships that will secure the state’s economy for decades to come.

Homegrown companies like Vivint, Qualtrics, Domo and Pluralsight have made remarkable strides in the tech world, and Utah’s pro-business climate continues to attract big names such as Adobe, Microsoft, Backcountry.com and EMC.

“Today, our economy is well-equipped to remain sustainable—it is more high-tech, global and diverse,” said Gov. Herbert. “Utah has the third most diverse economy in the country, with strong representation in the technology, financial services, aerospace and life-sciences sectors, among others.”

Utah’s gross domestic product has grown from $106.3 billion to $152.5 billion in the last 10 years, and the governor attributes that success to the state’s low and consistent tax rates, limited government and ability to collaborate.

Since the Top States study began 10 years ago, Utah is the first and only state to finish in the top half in each of the competitiveness categories.
