kevin-simister

Orem, UT — Kevin Simister, trusted advisor, leader, mentor, and friend, is retiring from Hawkins Advisors after 42 tax seasons.  Kevin plans to travel, spend time with family, not work on April 15, and perfect his woodworking skills (which are already pretty much perfect!).

Kevin joined Hawkins in 1975.  He practiced in all areas of the firm including audit, accounting, and tax.  His expertise and focus for many years has been helping clients in business entity structuring, estate planning, tax reduction strategies, compensation agreements, negotiations, expert witness, and valuations.  He served as the managing partner for 10 years.  His leadership was instrumental in the growth of the firm during a time period of significant change.  Kevin was responsible for bringing desktop computers into the office, our first network, first website, and coined MyCPA.com.  He was instrumental in creating our Retirement Department.  Kevin has been a developer of people.  During his time at Hawkins, we have grown from 10 to more than 75 employees.  He has trained and mentored staff and clients, teaching them how to become trusted advisors, successful business people, and leaders in their business and community. He believes a leader must have genuine affection for each member of the team.

Kevin has always enjoyed serving and helping people.  As Captain of an Emergency Medical Team for Pleasant Grove City, he responded to over 1,500 medical emergencies during his 12 years of volunteer service.  He has served in many professional advisory board positions including the President of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants(UACPA), Executive Board of the Provo Orem Chamber of Commerce, Governing Council of the American Institute of Public Accountants, Chaired the Utah Valley University Business Faculty Development Committee, and the Executive Board of the Purpose Investors Network.  He was recognized by the UACPA as the Outstanding CPA in Public Accounting in 2007.

During Kevin’s years of practice he has been a truly exceptional and respected advisor.  He has served his clients as a trusted advisor.  He protects them from unpleasant surprises through planning and implementation.  Kevin will say he doesn’t work with any businesses, just the people in the business.  His success has been through serving the people that are involved in the business and keeping it personal.  His secret sauce is his understanding and knowing the client, beyond the finances.  He can tell you the client’s family members, special medical or education needs, talents, and what they like to do for fun.  He will say he doesn’t have clients, but he sure has a lot of friends he works with.

We wish our friend, mentor, colleague, and soon to be retired partner many years of health and happiness in his retirement.

Orem, Utah – Utah Valley University (UVU) will kick off another academic year on Monday and welcome approximately 3,500 incoming freshman students – one of UVU’s largest incoming freshman classes on record – and their families to campus at its annual Freshman Convocation. As part of the ceremony, which begins at 6:00 p.m. at the UCCU Center, UVU will preview components of its Roots of Knowledge project, a bold, large-scale, permanent stained glass window exhibition comprising 80 individual panes that will total 10 feet in height and 200 feet in length when completed later this year. The project powerfully blends art, public space, and education, further strengthening the university’s vision and approach to engaged learning.

Upon completion, Roots of Knowledge will anchor an undulating wall of windows at the UVU Library entrance and will be unveiled to the public onNov. 18 as a capstone to the university’s 75th anniversary celebration.

Convocation attendees will be virtually transported through the exquisite and interactive stained glass window panes to learn of UVU’s unique mission and the opportunities that await them at UVU. The virtual experience was created by a cutting-edge multimedia team at UVU using the latest in digital and creative imaging technology integrated into some of the Roots of Knowledge window panes. The imagery will serve as a prelude to UVU President Matthew Holland’s welcome speech, which will include a discussion of Roots of Knowledge and its role in engaged learning.

“UVU Freshman Convocation is one of the most significant highlights of the academic year,” said President Holland. “The excitement felt by new students, their families, our faculty and staff will be elevated this year with UVU’s historic Roots of Knowledge exhibition. This extraordinary work of art underscores the university’s core commitment to serious reflection and consideration of the human mind’s greatest achievements. It will also serve as a centerpiece of our campus and yet another illustration of our engaged learning pedagogy and philosophy.”

As one of the four core themes of UVU, engaged learning immerses students in real-world contexts within the curriculum and activities outside the classroom to increase professional competence and confidence. Using this philosophy, hundreds of students and multiple faculty members have participated in the Roots of Knowledge project, from creating historical and cultural content to curriculum development that will enable Roots of Knowledge visitors to experience and more fully understand every visual element of the wall.

“Being a part of Roots of Knowledge has been an invaluable experience,” said 2016 UVU graduate Dallin Orr, who was the first student intern involved in the project – as a glass cutter, graphic designer and researcher – and has since been hired full-time at Holdman Studios as a glass painter. “It has given me a profound understanding of art and history and enabled me to create deep bonds with my professors and fellow students, as well as the artists at Holdman Studios. Importantly, I’m now gainfully employed.”

The Roots of Knowledge project is made possible through a public-private initiative led by UVU and Holdman Studios, one of the country’s top stained glass art studios based in Lehi, Utah, with funding from a generous donor community.

Roots of Knowledge Fast Facts:

  • 80 panes
  • 60,000 pieces of individual glass
  • Combines the work and knowledge of more than 40 professional artists and 26 UVU scholars
  • More than 350 UVU students participated in the project, as painters, project managers, programmers, designers and artists

Studies Weekly Hosts Flag of Hope Created by Thousands of Hand Impressions from Across the U.S.

Staff and Guests made red, white and blue impressions

The Flag for Hope, a touring U.S. flag created by thousands of hand and finger

impressions from Americans across the country as a symbol of unity and patriotism,

came to the corporate office of Studies Weekly today where staff members along with

other members of the community made their impressions in red, white or blue paint.

Several people from the community, including WordPerfect co-founder Alan Ashton,

added their impressions to the flag.

“We are proud to host the touring Flag of Hope and place our own impressions upon it,”

said Ed Rickers, CEO of Studies Weekly. “It symbolizes patriotism and a coming

together of all people to promote unity and peace. It aligns well with our support of the

Statue of Responsibility project, which promotes civil responsibility and participation in

our country’s election process.”

During the Flag of Hope exhibit at Studies Weekly, staff members and guests from the

community made impressions upon the flag in either red, white, or blue paint. The new

impressions will join those already made by thousands of Americans from across the

U.S.

“The Flag for Hope project is also about honor and respect for men and women that

have proudly worn a United States military uniform and fought for our freedoms,” said

Chris Cavedon, executive director of Flag for Hope. “Flag for Hope is a reminder that

freedom isn’t free. Many have sacrificed for the privileges that we all have today in this

country. The flag signifies appreciation and gratitude for those individuals who serve as

teachers, police, fire, doctors and nurses – it calls us to remember all Americans who

have made the ultimate sacrifice.”

The Flag of Hope aligns with the principles of Studies Weekly’s goal to increase civic

responsibility and encourage students to vote across the U.S.

Studies Weekly serves on the Board of the Responsibility Foundation and organization

raising funds to build The Statue of Responsibility, which will be a sister to the Statue of

Liberty and a symbol representing liberty and civic responsibility to exercise freedom. It

will represent responsibility to the world. Just as school children collected money to

build the Statue of Liberty, school children across the U.S. will have the opportunity to

raise funds to build the Statue of Responsibility, which will be same height as the Statue

of Liberty. It will be built on the West Coast connecting liberty and responsibility

together.

Additionally, to underscore its mission of building responsible citizens, Studies Weekly

invites schools throughout the U.S. to enroll for participation in the largest student mock

election in history prior to the November U.S. presidential campaign.

Through this event and its accompanying curriculum (4 weeks of material for K-2 and 10

weeks for grades 3-6) students learn civic responsibility and gain appreciation for the

democratic process that governs our nation. Then, on the mock election day, an

interactive map will display red or blue to designate the leading candidate for each state

with updated results every 30 seconds until 3:00 p.m. in each state’s respective time

zone.

“The Every Kid Votes!™ program teaches our students and future American citizens

that they don’t have to wait to be 18 to be heard,” said Rickers. “Through this program

we’re engaging students in our nation’s most important critical thinking and decision

making event.”

Since 1984, Studies Weekly has been providing innovative learning solutions for K-6

Social Studies, Science and Math in fun-to- use magazine and online formats. Studies

Weekly helps teachers to achieve optimal outcome and maximum enjoyment of learning

with less preparation and a dramatically lower cost than traditional textbooks require.

The Studies Weekly family of publications includes more than 120 unique classroom

periodicals that are currently in use in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin

Islands. For more information, please visit http://www.studiesweekly.com or view our

Legend Solar Ranks No. 29 on the 2016 Inc. 5000 with Three-Year Sales Growth of 7,102 Percent

The Company Ranks No. 1 Among Utah Companies, No. 2 in Energy Industry on Inc. Magazine’s 35th Annual List of America’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies

download

Washington, Utah, Aug. 17, 2016Inc. magazine today ranked Legend Solar No. 29 on its 35th annual Inc. 5000, the most prestigious ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. The list represents a unique look at the most successful companies within the American economy’s most dynamic segment—its independent small businesses. Companies such as Microsoft, Dell, Domino’s Pizza, Pandora, Timberland, LinkedIn, Yelp, Zillow and other well-known names gained their first national exposure as honorees of the Inc. 5000.

Legend Solar was ranked No. 1 among Utah companies and No. 2 in the Energy Industry in this year’s list.

“Being ranked near the top of this incredible group of entrepreneurs is an honor,” said Shane Perkins, co-owner and co-founder of Legend Solar. “This has been a team effort, and we appreciate everyone at our company who has worked so hard to build Legend Solar. We appreciate the opportunity to be able to share our successes with the entrepreneurial world.”

Perkins and his fellow co-owner and co-founder, Shaun Alldredge, launched Legend Solar in 2012. Working out of their cars, driving around their hometown of St. George, Utah, meeting with businesses and residents, and using the free Wi-Fi at their favorite bakery, these two tenacious men knew the market was ready for a more sustainable, renewable and efficient way for Intermountain West residents to live and work.

Since that first year of working out of their cars, Legend Solar has rapidly become a leading solar company in Utah. In 2015, they achieved 400 percent growth, a remarkable milestone that brought a revenue increase from $3.7 million to $18.3 million year over year.

“This year has been very fulfilling,” Alldredge said. “While we still have a lot of work to do to complete our goals, being recognized by SunPower, QuickBase and others this year has been a tremendous honor. These awards validate our hard work and drive us to continue providing the best solar options available for homeowners and businesses.”

The 2016 Inc. 5000, unveiled online at Inc.com and with the top 500 companies featured in the September issue of Inc. (available on newsstands Aug. 23) is the most competitive crop in the list’s history. The average company on the list achieved a mind-boggling three-year growth of 433 percent. The Inc. 5000’s aggregate revenue is $200 billion, and the companies on the list collectively generated 640,000 jobs over the past three years, or about 8 percent of all jobs created in the entire economy during that period. Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found at www.inc.com/inc5000.

“The Inc. 5000 list stands out where it really counts,” says Inc. President and Editor-In-Chief Eric Schurenberg. “It honors real achievement by a founder or a team of them. No one makes the Inc. 5000 without building something great—usually from scratch. That’s one of the hardest things to do in business, as every company founder knows. But without it, free enterprise fails.”

The annual Inc. 5000 event honoring all the companies on the list will be held from Oct. 18 through 20, 2016 in San Antonio, Texas. Speakers include some of the greatest entrepreneurs of this and past generations, such as best-selling author and strategist Tony Robbins, SoulCycle co-founders Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice, Cornerstone OnDemand founder, president and CEO Adam Miller, Marvell Technology Group director and co-founder Weili Dai, and New Belgium Brewing co-founder and executive chair Kim Jordan.

Legend Solar has also been honored in Utah as one of the Emerging 8 companies by Utah Business. In this annual recognition program, the fastest growing companies in Utah are celebrated for their entrepreneurial spirit, innovative business tactics and skyrocketing revenue growth. While the Fast 50 are selected based on a combination of revenue growth and total revenue, Utah Business also recognizes eight emerging companies who have not been in business the required five years, but are already sending off sparks.

Legend Solar Achieves 269 Percent Growth with 2016 Midyear Results

Legend Solar, one of the fastest-growing solar power companies in Utah, achieved $14.7 million in revenue for the first six months of 2016—a 269 percent increase over the same period in 2015. The company also celebrated other milestones from 2016, including the opening of a new Portland, Oregon, office, record-setting donations, award recognitions and other accolades.

Early in 2016, Shaun Alldredge and Shane Perkins, co-founders and co-owners of Legend Solar, accepted SunPower’s 2015 “Residential National Rising Star” award for their outstanding performance as a new SunPower dealer in 2015. The co-owners were also named finalists for the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2016 Award in the Utah Region, the only leaders from southern Utah selected in the competition.

Other honors and accolades this year include the award for Small Business of the Year, given during the 2016 QuickBase Customer Awards. Also, Dixie State University in St. George, Utah, named Legend Solar one of the Businesses of the Year at the university’s annual Dixie Awards.

In April, Legend Solar officially opened a new office in Portland. Portland was an optimal location for Legend Solar’s expansion throughout the Intermountain West and Pacific Northwest because it is often called the “Greenest City in America” for its well-known environmental policies. Portland has been named by the U.S. Department of Energy as one of 25 Solar America Cities for its promotion of solar technology adoption.

Legend Solar made history on April 29 when it announced a $10 million donation to Dixie State University’s football stadium renovation—now known as Legend Solar Stadium—the largest donation in the school’s history. In addition to the monetary donation, Legend Solar will install solar technology on the DSU campus, providing millions of dollars in energy savings over time. A 1,500-kilowatt system, which will be installed gradually through 2027, is projected to generate enough energy to power not only the stadium but also other buildings on campus, saving Dixie State approximately $300,000 a year on its power bill.

Also in April, Legend Solar, in partnership with SunPower, introduced the SunPower Equinox™ system. It is the first residential solar solution in the nation in which every major component has been designed and engineered by one company to work seamlessly together, delivering unbeatable power, long-term performance and curb appeal.

Utah named No. 1 state in CNBC ranking

Utah was named the No. 1 state for business in CNBC’s 10th annual Top States ranking released today. The study highlighted the state’s strong job growth, robust technology sector and industrious workforce.

“Our long traditions of collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship have earned us a spotlight on the nation’s economic map, and businesses have noticed,” said Gov. Herbert. “One shining example is the rapid growth of Utah’s tech industry—the rise of Silicon Slopes.”

Gov. Gary Herbert authored a post for CNBC’s America’s Top States for Business blog in which he discussed the economic impact of Utah’s rapidly expanding technology sector and the unprecedented partnerships that will secure the state’s economy for decades to come.

Homegrown companies like Vivint, Qualtrics, Domo and Pluralsight have made remarkable strides in the tech world, and Utah’s pro-business climate continues to attract big names such as Adobe, Microsoft, Backcountry.com and EMC.

“Today, our economy is well-equipped to remain sustainable—it is more high-tech, global and diverse,” said Gov. Herbert. “Utah has the third most diverse economy in the country, with strong representation in the technology, financial services, aerospace and life-sciences sectors, among others.”

Utah’s gross domestic product has grown from $106.3 billion to $152.5 billion in the last 10 years, and the governor attributes that success to the state’s low and consistent tax rates, limited government and ability to collaborate.

Since the Top States study began 10 years ago, Utah is the first and only state to finish in the top half in each of the competitiveness categories.

The Top States scorecard is based on more than 60 different measures of all 50 states. Click here to see CNBC’s full scorecard.
