Utah County Approves County Resource Management Plan

UTAH COUNTY PRESS RELEASE

August 7, 2017

Public Lands

PROVO –The Utah County Commission approved the Utah County Resource Management Plan (RMP) in commission meeting on Tuesday, July 25, 2017.  The approval of the plan caps a year-long effort to solicit input from citizens and other interested parties in how Utah County
will communicate local knowledge, management objectives, and policies related to natural resources on federal public lands.

The adoption of the Resource Management Plan for the county will ensure that Utah County will have a seat at the table when dealing with Federal Land issues.  According to Utah County Commission Chairman, Bill Lee, “this plan gives the County an opportunity to sit at the table with our Federal partners and discuss the policies and management that we would like to see happen.”

The State of Utah required all counties in the state to update their county general plans and to develop a Resource Management Plan (RMP) for the public lands and natural resources within their borders.  The goal was for counties to have specific planning objectives that allowed local government to have a strong voice in resource planning processes for public lands such as those managed by federal and state agencies. In Utah County, the percentage of public lands within the county is 58 percent.

Lee praised and expressed appreciation to those who had been involved in the process, “This process has been a collaborative effort by so many in our County, and we now have a Resource Management Plan for public lands that will benefit us as we move forward. Many thanks to all involved in a plan that will be a working document for many years to come.”

A general plan is a legally-required document that guides current and long-term growth. Utah County’s General Plan can be viewed at www.utahcounty.gov and the final copy of the Resource Management Plan at http://www.utahcountyplan.org.
